How Genesis Changes the Game

Older versions of Starcitizen’s Planet Tech required artists to handcraft each biome’s layout. Genesis automates that process, generating believable, organic worlds that react to environmental conditions rather than manual placement. - Realistic Terrain Formation:
Genesis introduces a new medium-tiling system that integrates height, erosion, and geological data. The result? Naturally formed canyons, mountains, and valleys that look and feel authentic. - Smart Rock and Resource Placement:
The new smart placement system distributes rocks and minerals based on realistic geology, improving exploration and mining gameplay. Upgraded rock visuals also make resource zones easier to identify. - Lush, GPU-Driven Biomes:
Using GPU-driven spawning, massive grasslands and detailed ground clutter can now be rendered efficiently. Grass aligns to gravity, conforms to terrain, and transitions smoothly from surface to orbit eliminating floating or patchy visuals.
The Secret Weapon: Virtual Terrain
At the heart of Genesis lies Virtual Terrain, a groundbreaking system for managing terrain caching and level-of-detail blending.

Consistent shading across scales
Seamless transitions from space to ground
Players can now spot geological features like mountain ranges and rivers from orbit and land directly on them with no visual disconnect. It’s a major leap forward in open-world rendering fidelity.
Going forward
Not only will genesis debut with Nyx system next year CIG has confirmed that Genesis will also be used to overhaul existing planets and moons in the Stanton and Pyro systems. Expect improved landscapes, better biome blending, and richer surface details across well-known worlds like Hurston, MicroTech, and ArcCorp. By combining scientific data with artistic design, CIG aims to make each planet feel alive, unique, and worth exploring.
As the developers put it, Genesis is about giving players the power to “find their own corner of the universe to explore, fall in love, and build a home.”
